Front yard in unseasonably warm Southeast Alaskan weather...

A woodpecker arrived
for 'under bark' dinner.
..

Up close and personal, thanks for a zoom lens...

June 23, 2015:

Silly Robin,
it's amazing when it puffs up
then relaxes back to its slender self...

Mid-May 2015:

Morning King Salmon Fishing Trip with the Hubs
in Juneau, Alaska from the Skiff...

October 18-30, 2014

Yakutat, Alaska...

View from one side of the bridge
heading to Cannon Beach...

View from the other side of the bridge...

At the head of the lake along the shoreline
(viewed from our back deck)
these bald eagles fighting over lunch consisting of an unlucky green-head mallard...

May 26, 2013:

A day fishing the Spring King Salmon Derby
including enjoying view wildlife
with my husband Max
aboard our skiff
in Juneau, Alaska...

Clams happily squirting
during low tide
along Indian Cove shoreline...
Uh oh, not even close to what we were
wanting to catch ~ Ha!
This porpoise was nearby
feeding on herring

throughout the day...

its mate to surface after

feeding on herring...

Another Pigeon Guillemot
couple...

Awe, no luck catching
the elusive king salmon yet ~
(Don't even ask me what's in this Sculpin's mouth - Yikes!)...

A Kingfisher
perched  atop the dock pilings...

Ka-zillion muscles above the shoreline
and the crows below are eating their
fill of other tidbits they were finding...

Another pair of geese
flying overhead...

May 11-12, 2013:

Hungry bald eagles...

May 10, 2013:

The temperature actually reached a delightful 74 degrees
in Juneau, Alaska today...

Young bald eagle soaring overhead...

May 7, 2013:

Vibrantly beautiful birds
showed up in the yard today in Juneau, Alaska...

Dark-Headed Junco...

Gold-Crowned Sparrow...

Other Junco's also arrived today,
just loving it...

May 6, 2013:

My husband and I went fishing in our skiff for king salmon,
although we ended up netting a
dungeness crab instead in Juneau, Alaska...

We spotted this dungeness crab crawling along the shallows of the harbor
shortly after launching the skiff...
After two attempts with it crawling like crazy and the wind catching the boat
 - we successfully netted it...

I told my husband,  "The crab is crawling under the floorboard,
you better grab it." He said, "Don't worry, it has nowhere to go;
I don't want to get pinched"...

Common Merganser...

Male and Female
Marbled Murrelets...

Same
Marbled Murrelets...

Male and Female
Harlequins...

Another Marbled Murrelet;
calling its mate that's fishing nearby...

Pigeon Guillemot...

Max spotted salmon fry near the shoreline,
and shortly thereafter so did this bald eagle...

He was lucky and took flight
while grabbing a salmon fry in its talons...

And, the story continues...I hated to tell Max, "Told ya so!"
We ended up having to use a camera to locate this bugger
under the floorboard of the skiff,
then a coat hanger to fish it out once we arrive back home...

March 14, 2013:

A terrific day watching wildlife show up
after a long and hard winter
in Juneau, Alaska...

Tiny house finches
resting during a snow squall
on the branches of these alder trees...
A raven overlooking Lemon Creek in the valley...
A raven flying
overhead...
A bald eagle perched in an evergreen tree
basking in the sunshine...
A colorful house finch appeared in the front yard
landing atop the small snow bank...
Can't help but think the poor darlin'
looks tired and sleepy...

Three ravens  in the valley
overlooking Lemon Creek
perched in evergreen trees in Juneau, Alaska...

March 2, 2013:

February 25, 2013:

Beautiful Day
in Juneau, Alaska...

Soaring bald eagle captured at 9:00 a.m.
from my front yard today...
Another bald eagle and ravens captured
through my kitchen window
at 12:00 p.m. yesterday...

February 2-5, 2013:

Wildlife viewed in Yakutat, Alaska...

Pod of sea lions offshore barking like crazy!
We were told by a local (Skip)

that these are not the typical species
found in Yakutat (as those do not bark),
but these instead migrated from California...

They were actually quite aggressive...

We came upon numerous bald eagles
while driving out to Cannon Beach...

Sunshine peaking through the evergreen trees
with ice fog hovering above the roadway...

There were coho present in the roadside creek,
which these eagles must have been fishing for,
as they're fanning their wings out to dry...

This eagle appears to be a mature juvenile
by the dark marking still on its crown...

A juvenile...

I absolutely fell in love
with this character,
he definitely had a
picturesque attitude to behold...

This was another bald eagle
perched on a nearby snow bank
that appeared to like
his photograph taken ~ lucky me...

We happened upon
additional bald eagles
when returning to town...

December 29, 2012:

My husband and I spent a mostly snowy
although wonderful winter day
sport fishing and sightseeing
aboard our 43' F/V Chelsey
in Juneau, Alaska...

A sea duck swimming alongside
our F/V Chelsey
as they tend to like to do...

Well, all we were lucky enough
to catch on this day were four cod,

here's a rather large one
we threw back...
A series of photographs of a regal bald eagle
that spotted the cod
and circled around it a couple of times
trying to grasp it in its talons,
but to no avail as it turns out the cod was too large
for the eagle to carry away...

The seagulls tend wait
until the very last minute
defying this big boat approaching

before taking flight...

November 26-27, 2012:

A raven came visiting for a time during the
first snowfall of the season in Juneau, Alaska...

The raven perched for a half hour on this branch
also mid-morning and appeared to be content
with the first snowfall of the season...

Late-October 2012:

A scenic and absolutely beautiful capture of photographs
by my husband when he recently traveled
to my hometown of Yakutat, Alaska...

Several captures of a cow moose
along the edge of the forest...

Brown bears on an early morning stroll
at the end of the Dangerous River Bridge...

Headed out fishing
and landed this nice white king salmon...

October 22, 2012:

A fabulous viewing of Alaska
mountain goats grazing on Heinzleman's Ridge ~
captured from my yard in Juneau...

October 13, 2012:

The first Wilson's Snipe
I had the pleasure of viewing in my front yard
in Juneau, Alaska.

What a treat, as it hung around for several days...

This Wilson's Snipe stood perfectly still
for several minutes during the crazy-rainy downpour.

Notice the water droplet at the end of its beak..
.

Early October 2012:

Our splendid wildlife sightings this autumn
in Juneau, Alaska...

While driving out to the Mendenhall Glacier
we came upon this baby porcupine
that sadly had an injured right front paw...

A few photographs of a
spawned out Coho swimming...

Another
spawned out Coho...

A bear, very recently, dug this area up
adjacent to the pathway...

We stopped by to visit my sister in law
and were lucky to capture a few ducks that are ever-present
swimming in her backyard lake...

Fall 2012:

Outstanding recent wildlife sightings
during a trip my husband Max,
brother Steve and his son's Brian and Shane
recently experienced while traveling to
Tok, Alaska to work on clearing family property...

An incredible grizzly bear
they came upon...

Numerous Dall Sheep...

Grouse...

A phenomenal black bear in the thicket
under a light dusting of snow...

Max capturing videos of
elk bulls in this particular photograph in Canada,
including taking a few additional snapshots...

Late-August 2012:

Commercial power trolling for King Salmon and Coho in
the outside waters of Southeast Alaska...

[Photographs courtesy
via my husband Captain Max of the F/V Chelsey
and his deckhand Scott]

Blue Shark are not a fishermen's friend by any means,
as Captain Max has lost many half-eaten-salmon
when they've shown up in instances such as this reigning havoc...

Whales feeding along
the sunny shoreline...
More whales
feeding offshore...
Whales feeding in
dense fog...

August 19, 2012:

Much to my delight,
a couple of friendly birds landed on my back deck
for a photoshoot...

A cute and petite Dark-Eyed Junco (Junko)...
A very colorful Varied Thrush
with 'an attitude'...

Just love its different poses...

One last pose before taking flight...
August 18, 2012:

A porcupine came to visit about 9:00 p.m.
to my side yard in Juneau, Alaska
while I was picking a few
raspberries for a recipe photo op...

He came on his annual trek
through my yard.  He surprised me, as it was pitch black
when I was taking a photograph of raspberries on the vine
using an LED flashlight, and then
he alerted me to his presence by
softly snorting over and over again for several minutes.
I finally noticed what it was when he was about 5' away...

Pretty good capture, huh?
Well, considering
the circumstance and all...

He hung around for about
10 to 15 minutes slowly walking, stopping, sitting, etc.,
all the while looking at me and acting like he was
genuinely happy to see me ~
(He has apparently grown accustomed to me
taking his photograph during every visit
since he was a baby ;)...

August 12, 2012:

Juneau, Alaska...

This is the first whale we encountered...

We later were lucky to view this mother whale
and her young one ~
schools of herring were everywhere...

Mergansers (seaducks) are often known as "sawbills"
because of their serrated bills to grip slippery prey,
such as the young herring they are feeding on
along this shoreline of Tee Harbor
when we were docking our boat...

August 11, 2012:

Juneau, Alaska...

What a treat, a very huge whale
decided to swim alongside
our boat for a time...

We spotted many baby herring
in shallow water along the shoreline
of Tee Harbor (that's a good sign)...

August 10, 2012:

Day 1 fishing the 3-Day Golden North Salmon Derby
with my father in law from his boat
(no fish today, although we had great fun)...

A Gull
taking flight...

Pigeon Guillemots
(seabirds related to the puffins)
that breed on the coasts and islands in southern Alaska
were in abundance all day...

A Bald Eagle
perched on Eagle Reef...

August 5, 2012:

A day sport fishing and sightseeing
with family in Juneau, Alaska...

We decided to jig for fresh herring and got lucky,
here are the first four...

A bright and shiny live herring...

Live herring swimming in a bucket
of fresh saltwater (we ended up with about 20)...

My first-ever halibut
I reeled in, it was a whoppin' 20 pounder...

A striking
Quillback Rockfish...

Black Oystercatchers
flying around the boat...

A Pigeon Guillemot
(not a duck, but an alcid - seabird related to puffins)
that breed on coasts and islands in southern Alaska...

The whale watchers should have stayed,
as we had a great view of a couple Killer Whales
right after they passed by...

On our drive to town
we luckily came upon this beautiful doe in
the Brotherhood Park wetlands...

We stopped by to view how many
Chum were heading up Lemon Creek to spawn
and they were in abundance...

Another great day in our lovely town of
Juneau, Alaska

July 28, 2012:

Views from Thane Road
and the Sheep Creek area
in Juneau, Alaska...

What an amazing sight,
I've never seen so many spawning Chum Salmon...

Watch this particular
Chum Salmon (in the next two photographs as well),
it sure has diligence...

July 28, 2012:

False Outer Point
in North Douglas, Alaska...

A stately female Merganser
with five abiding chicks in tow...

July 28, 2012:

An amazing amount of Chum
(aka Dog Salmon; Market Name: Northern Keta)
swimming up Salmon Creek
to spawn in Juneau, Alaska ~ We did not, however,
see many Humpies
(aka Pink Salmon; Market Name: Pacific Royal Pink Salmon)...

These are rather large Chum Salmon
swimming up the creek
in just a couple of inches of water...

A Black-Headed Gull
heading down for its dive
seeking Chum eggs...

No shortage of Seagulls
and Black-Headed Gulls
all seeking to eat their fill...

A Black-Headed Gull
in dive-mode
with its head underwater
pecking up Chum eggs...

The same Black-Headed Gull
resurfacing with a
Chum egg...

These Black-Headed Gulls
are rather beautiful
and fascinating to watch while in flight...

July 24, 2012:

Many species of birds came to visit
while I was working in my yard in Juneau, Alaska today,
although I was only able to capture
a few photographs of them...

[Special thanks to Connie for assisting me in identifying them]

A vibrant Varied Thrush...
An early arrival of a somewhat rare Cedar Waxwing
(the Bohemian species have a orange hue under the tail vs white),
a treat to view such a beautiful species

that normally tend to arrive here in Juneau in the fall...

A mature Junko that has
a seed in its mouth...

A male Red-Breasted Sapsucker Woodpecker
tapping for its mate...
A female Red-Breasted Sapsucker Woodpecker
posturing and answering the male...
Another female is feeling ousted,
her look says it all...

A Tufted Puffin

35 miles offshore...
An Albatross and Sea Pigeons
squabbling over a meal...
Playful Fur Seal
stopped by for a visit...
"Riders in the Sky"...

This particular Fur Seal played around the F/V Chelsey
for 2.5 hours and toyed with their incoming salmon,
but it ended up not touching any of them after all.

My husband says,
"They're are the most social of all mammals
that I have ever seen"...

Well, "Hello"...

These Murres

(the seabirds in the middle)

posture and appear just like miniature Penquins,

while sharing their floating log with Seagulls...
The Murres boldly
"standing at attention"
to the Seagull...

July 2, 2012:

Various mature and juvenile bald eagles coming and going
at 9:30 p.m. in Juneau, Alaska
perching on their favorite evergreen tree, as was posted a few days ago,
located across the street in my neighbor's yard;
salmon arrived in the nearby creek...

June 25, 2012:

I love it when different species of birds
stop by for a visit...

A Dark-Eyed Junco (aka "Snowbird")

This medium-sized sparrow has a pink beak,
a crisp color pattern,
and bright white tail feathers that flash when in flight...

the Red-Breasted Sap Sucker Woodpecker

on the other Side of the Same Tree...

Spring 2012:

A baby seabird swimming in the ocean
and ravenous seagulls waiting for for salmon tidbits
to be thrown overboard by commercial fisherman
in Southeast Alaska...

March-April 2012:

On the water in
Southeast Alaska in the springtime
with sea lions taking a siesta in the sunshine...

April 2, 2012:

My first viewing of a red-breasted sapsucker woodpecker this year
who was kind enough to greet me this morning
by pecking on my fence (their mating ritual)...

March 31, 2012:

Eagle soaring overhead on this fine spring day...

March 26, 2012:

A baby squirrel stopped by in my backyard
to munch on a pine cone after basking in the sunshine...

November 26, 2011:

I recently published a new video of
"Southeast Alaska Wildlife"
Video [4:00 Mins.]

(Music credits: My Heart Will Go On - Titanic Soundtrack)

November 24, 2011 (Thanksgiving Day):

A baby Porcupine came to visit:

We drove into our yard and were surprised to find this baby porcupine
in the driveway at about 9:00 p.m.
It got scared and ran to hide from us in the 6' tall hedge tree
under the eave of the house in the front yard...poor thing!

We left it alone after my husband captured this photograph,
and it ran off shortly thereafter...

What a treat, and a cutie ;)

"You can't see me..."

Mid-November 2011:

Credits to my husband Max
for recently capturing the following deer
photographs in Southeast Alaska...

Early November 2011:

My husband Max and his
brother Steve's recent road trip to Tok, Alaska
to take supplies to Mielke properties...

Max began his journey, to meet his brother Steve
who is working in Skagway,
via ferry with Steve's truck from Juneau to Skagway.
While beginning their trip, they happened upon this cow and calf...

October 2011:

Yakutat, Alaska...

A couple of bald eagles perched on driftwood at Situk River...

Max says, "These are the four out of the seven that were actually there!"

September 30, 2011:

Juneau, Alaska...

This blue jay befriended my father in law, and taps its beak on the
deck railing signaling that he wants a peanut...

A friendly neighborhood squirrel just stopped by
to show off this mushroom he's eating...

August 26, 2011:

I had numerous tiny birds of various species
visit the yard area in front of my office window ~
it was pouring down rain, and I had to take
these photographs through the window
so I wouldn't scare them away
(they move so flittingly fast that they're
somewhat difficult to capture)...

August 17, 2011:

Photographs captured while out
commercial fishing aboard the F/V Chelsey...

Now this is one large squid my husband's deckhand
got out of the belly of a salmon!

A huge jellyfish...

Killer whale swimming along with the F/V Chelsey for quite some time...

Another killer whale was swimming alongside too for quite a ways...

Sea lions resting on the rocky shoreline...

Amazing fishing trip while viewing
 such beautiful wildlife and scenery...

August 5, 2011:

I was lucky to have two different
red-headed sapsucker woodpeckers,
and a couple of tiny birds come visit my yard today...

June 10, 2011:

Juneau, Alaska...

I got a kick out of watching this Robin strut around my front yard today...

June 5, 2011:

This plump Robin just landed on our fence late in the afternoon...

I think this Robin was trying to find a solitude location to get away from
noisy lawnmowers and weed wackers in the neighborhood...

Yep, it's the same Robin, although from this side it looks as though it's
a different one because of the markings on its face...

June 4, 2011:

This Raven was sleeping on this tree branch...
I noticed it when I first went outside in the early evening,
and then 30 minutes later it still had not moved from the same exact position
while dogs were barking, children were laughing, etc...

Sometimes all it takes is to look up,
and the wonders I find never cease to amaze me...

June 3, 2011:

Three Mountain Goats on Heiltzlemans Ridge photographed from my side yard
during late evening in Juneau, Alaska...

May 30, 2011:

A crisp blue and clear day,
so Bald Eagles were soaring off and on all day long...
Bald Eagles are so regal...

May 23, 2011

5th Dery Day:
My husband and I were able to fish, watch wildlife, and enjoy the beautiful day...

The herring were in abundance during most of the derby days in Tee Harbor,
although not as much as we saw today...
they were flipping everywere, so the Pigeon Guillemots (not a duck,
but an alcid - seabird related to puffins) that breed on coasts and islands
from southern Alaska were prevalent everywhere...

These Pigeon Guillemots are so graceful...

An action shot of a Pigeon Guillemot taking flight...

Lucky to capture such a close-up of a herring jumping out of the water inside Tee Harbor
(you can actually see its eye)...
Killer Whales approaching -
there goes the fishing ~
bring on the frenzy-feeding-on-herring watching...
Killer Whales feeding on schools of herring...

The Killer Whales thrashing about...

This huge whale was attempting to get away from the killer whales,
so it entered Tee Harbor and ended coming up
just a few feet in front of our skiff...
Numerous Killer Whales still having a feeding frenzy on herring...

Last sighting of Killer Whales and a Whale,
so we're on our way to the beach at Tee Harbor to launch the skiff,
and then start the drive home...

We happened upon a young Black Bear along the roadside
(it's still shedding its winter coat) ~
He looks sleepy...

The Black Bear decided to head back into the brush...
He decided to give us one last look...
What an awesome day of sighting ~ Only here in Alaska!

May 21 and 22, 2011:

3rd and 4th Derby Days:  My husband was able to capture
these photographs during is outing...

A deer on the side of the road on my husband's drive out to the fishing grounds,
basically near the same place we saw a doe a couple of weeks ago...

He came upon two more deer further out the road...

He was lucky to capture a close-up photograph
of this whale while fishing from his skiff...

This is how close the whales swim at times to the shoreline,
including near boats when feeding on herring...

May 8, 2011:

2nd Derby Day: I was able to capture these photographs
while on the fishing grounds in Juneau, Alaska...

A Bald Eagle sitting regally off the point at Tee Harbor...

The Marbled Murrelets were everywhere feeding on herring...

A River Otter keeping an eye on us...

A single Marbled Murrelet just surfaced from feeding on herring...

A Scoter riding the surf swells...

A Raven enjoying fresh King Salmon eggs...

May 24, 2011:

A Bald Eagle drying out while spreading its wings atop an evergreen tree
A small squirrel greeting us
as we arrived nearing the end of our day
to first visit my father in law...
for quite some time in the neighborhood early this afternoon...

Fanning its wings to dry them a bit...

Nearly a half hour later - it was content and stayed a few more minutes longer
with its wings tucked back in, and then the he flew away...

May 20, 2011:

A Neighborly Red-Breasted Sapsucker Woodpecker

This particular Woodpecker relentlessly pecks on this hardy board
holding a building permit sign across the street from our house;
it's been at it off and on for months now! If it's not pecking on this sign -
it's been doing so more often on a nearby neighbor's house,
and it's rather loud
(what NICE neighbors they are to have the PATIENCE to put up with its incessant pecking!)
He pecks beginning in the wee hours of the morn
and often does so into the afternoon most days.

May 9, 2011:

I believe the first photograph is of the male, and the second and third of the female ~
these Robins (I know, boring to most ~
although it means spring is here ;)
were eating worms in our backyard today,
just after we spotted the Hairy Woodpecker below...

A Hairy Woodpecker my husband spotted in our backyard
(I was able to capture three photographs below
through our living room window) on May 9, 2011:

April 10, 2011:

I captured the following photographs while aboard our 43' commercial
power troller the F/V Chelsey in Juneau, Alaska yesterday...

Black sea ducks called Scoters were in abundance today...

We happened upon this scene just past Thane
where numerous Scoters landed and were feeding...

Seagulls simply thrive in this inclement
Southeast Alaska weather...

March 22, 2011:

My husband Max captured the following wildlife photographs
during his recent trip to Sitka, Alaska
(aka Sitka by the Sea)...

This healthy seagull is eating something...
Only a few Trumpeter Swans over winter in Sitka...

Max says, "This is a Spoonbill Duck!"

A Raven perched to bask in the sun in a nearby tree...

Max captured another photograph
of the same Trumpeter Swan...

March 20, 2011:

The following photographs are wildlife that we were greeted
with during our daily activities yesterday here in Juneau, Alaska...

Yep...it's my friendly baby squirrel eating a
miniature pine cone - Too sweet, huh?

He likes his picture taken - Yay, for me!

A varied thrush eating seeds...

The same varied thrush basking in the sunshine...

A huge raven took great interest when my husband was eating his lunch
in his pickup while taking a break from
working on our commercial boat nearby...

Oh, yes siree...he had a buddy close by checking the hubs out as well ~
Max said, "I felt sorry for them - I wanted to give them some food,
but it's illegal; plus too many people were watching anyway."

March 7, 2011:

Some Alaska wildlife decided to pay me a visit this morning...

A Bald Eagle stayed in my yard visiting just long enough
so I was able to capture a couple of photographs ~ What a beauty!

At the same time, here comes my buddy
the cute lil' baby squirrel to see what all the commotion was about...

Spring 2011:

These photographs were taken by my husband in the spring of 2011
while commercial power trolling...

The next series of five photographs are of whales in the ocean...

My husband feeding bread to some ducks...

Sea lions taking a reprieve...

  1. My husband loves Alaska Wildlife, hence the moose photographs in Anchorage, Alaska. He is also an avid hunter here in Southeast Alaska, and I'm super delighted that he takes time to shoot photographs of his trips! We're also grateful to Tad for sharing his 'historical' photograph with all of us...and hopefully more will follow after the upcoming deer and moose hunting season...
